Overtourism in Thailand – is it a problem? F1 in Bangkok? – April 24

Author: Tim Newton Today

Thailand news – ‘Overtourism’ – a word you’re going to be hearing a lot more in Thailand. In amongst all the hand-wringing and pearl-clutching, some tourism tzars are pushing forward the 300 baht ‘tourism tax’ as a solution… again.

Phuket and Pattaya are being singled out as ‘over tourism’ locations whilst the government mulls trying to push the tourism crowds into second-tier destinations.

The Thai PM is keen to get an F1 race around the streets of Bangkok. But where?! And a much-seen video of a taxi striking a pedestrian at a crosswalk in Bangkok has re-ignited the pedestrian safety issue around Bangkok again.

And Thailand has hit another power-usage record on the back of the string of hot nights around the country.

Tim Newton Today is daily news commentary about Thai and the region, including issues of interest to expats and travellers to Thailand.
